Is it bad to sleep with makeup on?

Who’s guilty of dropping off with makeup on? I am, simply because I have forgotten or if I was feeling super lazy. Truth is, it’s not good to sleep with makeup on. Over the years, my knowledge of makeup and skincare has increased and I came to realise how important it is to remove makeup before sleeping. Don’t get me wrong, I still get the odd lazy nights where I just use wipes to remove makeup off my face, but I usually have a full cleanse “routine” to make sure my skin can breathe and repair itself overnight.

My top 3 reasons for why you should remove makeup before bed:

  1. Breakouts – Ever wonder why or how you got a pimple overnight?! Well, it’s dirt (including makeup) built up and blocked up the pores. The chemicals from makeup irritate and infect the pores, which causes spots or acne.
  2. Age quicker – Sleeping with your makeup on, does not let your skin breathe freely, it results in the renewal process slowing down. As well as that, all the chemicals attack your skin and damage the compounds that are supposed to aid your skin in staying healthy and wrinkle free.
  3. Irritation and dryness – Chemicals from the makeup, dirt from the environment and all other chemicals can cause irritation and redness to the skin and eyes. Irritation levels can increase if you begin to experience dryness of the skin and in the eyes.

Now you know why it’s super important to ensure you go to bed with a makeup-free face. One night of sleeping in makeup won’t give you a wrinkle, but if it becomes a habit, you may end up looking older than you are, with all those wrinkles and we don’t want that do we? Even if you don’t wear any makeup, give your face a little clean before bed. Our skin picks up dirt throughout the day, we don’t see it, but it’s there, believe me!
