Is it bad to sleep with makeup on?

Who’s guilty of dropping off with makeup on? I am, simply because I have forgotten or if I was feeling super lazy. Truth is, it’s not good to sleep with makeup on. Over the years, my knowledge of makeup and skincare has increased and I came to realise how important it is to remove makeup before sleeping. Don’t get me wrong, I still get the odd lazy nights where I just use wipes to remove makeup off my face, but I usually have a full cleanse “routine” to make sure my skin can breathe and repair itself overnight.

My top 3 reasons for why you should remove makeup before bed:

  1. Breakouts – Ever wonder why or how you got a pimple overnight?! Well, it’s dirt (including makeup) built up and blocked up the pores. The chemicals from makeup irritate and infect the pores, which causes spots or acne.
  2. Age quicker – Sleeping with your makeup on, does not let your skin breathe freely, it results in the renewal process slowing down. As well as that, all the chemicals attack your skin and damage the compounds that are supposed to aid your skin in staying healthy and wrinkle free.
  3. Irritation and dryness – Chemicals from the makeup, dirt from the environment and all other chemicals can cause irritation and redness to the skin and eyes. Irritation levels can increase if you begin to experience dryness of the skin and in the eyes.

Now you know why it’s super important to ensure you go to bed with a makeup-free face. One night of sleeping in makeup won’t give you a wrinkle, but if it becomes a habit, you may end up looking older than you are, with all those wrinkles and we don’t want that do we? Even if you don’t wear any makeup, give your face a little clean before bed. Our skin picks up dirt throughout the day, we don’t see it, but it’s there, believe me!

Taking off my make up is the only reason I dont wear it every day haha. I’ll definitely remember your post if I think of skipping removing my make up.

    • Haha! I know, I use to wear makeup all the time but not anymore.

  • I used to sleep with my make up on all the time when I was younger because I used to say “my skin is bad anyway”, but since the say I started taking better care of it (like using the right moisturizer and removing makeup before going to bed) it really improved. Now I can’t even imagine going to bed with make up on, not only it’s bad for the skin, but now I don’t have my pillow as dirty (so less laundry for me yay!)

    • Ooo that sounds just like the teenage me. Haha.
And yes to cleaner pillow cases!

  • I always always wash all my makeup off before bed. A couple months ago I forgot for the first time in years and the next day my skin felt terrible and I immediately broke out. I love the feeling of going to bed with a fresh clean face and it makes so much difference in the health of my skin.

    • You ain’t the only one, I believe a clean face before bed makes a huge difference.

Definitely take make-up off before I sleep but there has been times where I am just too tired! I usually regret it the next day! Hate the feeling of mascara on my lashes in the morning!

    • Oh yeah! I hate that feeling too; clumpy and dry.

  • I always take my make up off, but….I’m very bad at giving up and leaving stubborn eye make up on. I need to invest in a good waterproof make up remover. Which wipes would you recommend for those lazy days?

    • Simple Kind To Eyes Eye Make-Up Remover pads are quite good for removing stubborn eye makeup. Or you can put a little olive/coconut oil on a cotton pad, that works wonders. I usually use coconut oil to remove stubborn eye makeup.

  • I’m so bad when it comes to taking my make up off before bed. If I can force myself to do it then I usually just wipe my face quickly with a make up wipe!

I always feel horrid if I sleep with make up on especially eye make up as I read years ago that it ages your eyes 10 days of you keep your make up on! This is so not ideal so I try to remove my makeup everyday and as thoroughly as possible xxxxx

    • Wow! 10 days?! That’s crazy! Even if I feel lazy, I have to get up to remove make up otherwise I can’t relax.

  • I am terrible for this – but I also wear makeup so rarely I don’t think it’s much of an issue.
Something I always do if I use makeup wipes if rinse my face off – if the chemicals on those wipes can dissolve makeup just think of what they could do to your skin :O

  • I don’t know how people can do it! Even if I come home tired after a long day, I still cannot leave it on. Great post 🙂
